We're looking for somebody with the knowledge, passion and energy to lead RSPB Scotland's management at our new Glencripesdale Reserve on the beautiful Morvern peninsula, and at Glenborrodale, "just across the loch" in equally amazing Ardnamurchan. If you have an enthusiasm to save nature and inspire people, are well organised, focused, resilient and a great communicator, then this could be the job for you! Experience of land management in remote areas and Atlantic Rainforest would be welcome, but we are more interested in who you are and what you want to achieve, than what you've done; we'll provide support for candidates with less experience, but the right mix of talent. This is an exciting opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in this incredible landscape.

What's the role about? 

Glencripesdale & Glenborrodale are stunning examples of Scotland's Rainforest - but they have their problems which we need to sort - fast. As part of the Argyll, Arran and Ardnamurchan Team you will; lead our work in terms of the planning and implementation of our ambitious conservation management objectives; look after two reserves with unique conservation challenges, making sure they deliver for nature; engage with local communities and visitors. You’ll need to know how to support and motivate the sites' Warden and area work teams and a range of RSPB and other specialists so that our work is at true landscape scale. 

You will be:

  1. Responsible for the production/delivery of reserve management plans.
  2. The main point of contact for the local community, neighbours and other external parties in order to build /maintain good relationships.
  3. Working with the Rural Surveyors to ensure that the reserve infrastructure is well-maintained and compliant.
  4. Responsible for scheduling, organising and controlling on-site activities to maximise future visitor experience and income potential.
  5. Compiling and managing the site budgets to ensure financial compliance and delivery of RSPB objectives

Essential skills, knowledge and experience: 

  • You will understand the ecological & survey requirements of key species and habitats
  • You will have knowledge of project management
  • You will be able to demonstrate putting Health, Safety & Environmental management knowledge into practice
  • Knowledge of cross-compliance/risk management
  • You will have great interpersonal and communication skills
  • You will be able to demonstrate skills in leadership
  • Budget management will be familiar to you
  • You will be adept at problem solving through influencing and negotiation and by being diplomatic
  • You will have a proven track record of managing nature reserves/land for conservation purposes
  • You will be able to demonstrate a track record of managing people (staff, contractors and/or volunteers).

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
  • Use of machinery and equipment associated with upland habitats
  • First Aid training, herb/pesticide use, 4WD/ATV use, Chainsaw
