Merrist Wood College are looking for an arborist/tree surgeon professional who is keen to pass on their knowledge and give something back by instructing others in their area of expertise.

You may not have considered a job like this before, and you may not have direct experience of teaching or a teaching qualification but what is more important is that you have a passion and enthusiasm for developing and nurturing the next generation of arboriculture professionals.

As an Arboriculture Vocational Trainer, you will deliver short course provision and practical modules for full time students. You will work side-by-side with our arboriculture teaching staff and support in delivering purposeful, yet exciting practical and theory lessons. You will be responsible for guiding learners and candidates as they build a wide range of practical skills across vocational pathways in Arboriculture.

This can be full or part time, please note on your application form your preference and working hours, if part time.

What do you need to be a successful Arboriculture Vocational Trainer?

You will have an appropriate arboriculture qualification, with extensive industry knowledge and excellent knowledge of Health & Safety regulations, along with the following NPTC qualifications:

  • Chainsaw Maintenance
  • Tree Climbing and Aerial rescue
  • Tree felling up to 380mm
  • Chainsaw use from rope and harness

Whilst previous teaching or instructing experience and qualifications would be an advantage, it is not a requirement. As long as you have the qualifications and experience to teach arboriculture and demonstrate the attributes to be an inspirational trainer, we can provide you with the necessary training, development and support to equip you to teach in the FE sector.

You will also have strong organisation skills coupled with the ability to prioritise workloads and will benefit from being part of a supportive team, working in a varied and interesting role with a variety of opportunities for career development.

What are the benefits of this role?

There really is no limit in terms of your personal growth, development and career by joining one of the largest Education Providers in the UK. We can offer professional development opportunities for your vocational context or as an educator, and we will work with you to ensure you have a development plan in place to ensure that you have the skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience to excel within the role.

If you do not already hold a teaching or assessing qualification, we can support you in obtaining a nationally recognised NPTC assessor qualification, as well as a Level 3 Award in Education Training or Level 5 Apprenticeship in Education.

Additionally, you will be given the opportunity to continually develop and complete further NPTC qualifications, in areas such as;

  • Tree inspection and clearing
  • Ground-based arboriculture
  • Ariel arboriculture
  • Landscape tool training

We can also support you in obtaining a D1 Driving Licence, as well as Health & Safety and First Aid at Work qualifications.

You’ll also get to work within a beautiful 420-acre estate of woodlands, wetlands, livestock, gardens and grasslands. Merrist Wood College has a national and international reputation amongst employers and industry specialists and a long history of providing unrivalled education in the land-based sectors, offering outstanding facilities for floristry, horticulture, landscaping and garden design, including a campus nursery, workshops and design studios.
